How to (Side) Hustle Your Way to Your Dreams

When I graduated high school in 2012, I knew I had to get smart about a lot of things.  Money talks and B.S walks, especially for women working in a man’s world. If my 20s have taught me anything, it’s that if you want to succeed, you have to work hard and make each day count. When I tell people that I used to be an Uber driver, nanny and student all at the same time, they look at me like I’m crazy. Unfortunately, the bills don’t care if you’re tired; they have to be paid. Through years of working, I discovered how to balance my practical needs with my dreams by pursuing financial security through side hustles. 

The Jobs / Side Hustles: 

1. Nanny/babysit cute kids!

Reminder: only become a nanny if you genuinely love working with young children. I always loved working with kiddos, and being a nanny hands down was my favorite time in life. As a nanny, you care for kids, do arts and crafts, take the kids to fun places, and provide love and cuddles. As a childcare provider, my mission was to give the best possible experience when mom and dad aren’t home. I  also loved being a nanny because of nap time (for the kids, of course), which can be anywhere from two to three hours. This is an ideal time for studying, writing essays, or finishing projects for classes. As a nanny, you really do become a member of the family. They become your biggest cheerleaders! I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. 

2. Drive around on your own schedule.

Before Covid hit, I would be on the road as an Uber Driver when I didn’t have class. What I loved most about Uber is that I decide my hours. There is no schedule that I must stick with or quote I must meet for the company. Uber provided me with money for target runs, dinner with friends, and books for class. It was a wonderful resource that offered the flexibility to earn while not stressing about clocking in, controlling bosses. etc. The same can be said for DoorDash and Uber Eats, and other ride share/food delivery apps. 

3. Market your crafty hobbies.

This side hustle can take you far…if you do it properly. If I had any kind of artistic talent, I would be selling my creations or offering my services asap! For instance, if you know how to sew, offer tailoring services to your classmates or coworkers! If you can knit scarves, hats, mittens, or leg warmers, spread the word and start an Etsy account. Passionate about social media? You can sell your content creation services on Fiverr. Art and graphic design is also always in high demand. This side hustle allows you to fuel your creativity while being financially responsible. 

4. Tutor a subject you excel in.  

When I say I could not pass a math class without my tutor, I mean I SERIOUSLY could not pass a math class without a tutor. If you’re someone who loves to teach, excels at a certain subject, and wants to make money, take a leap into the tutoring world. There are sites where you can sign up to tutor online and have zoom call sessions with students. You can also post on local Facebook groups that you’re open to work! This side hustle is great because you get to create your own schedule. 

If you’re conflicted between pursuing your dreams or being “realistic,” remember that there is a middle ground! A side hustle can provide financial security, so you won't suffer from an empty wallet on the way to the top. If you work hard enough, it is 100% possible to pursue your passion and keep up with expenses!
