How to Fight Your Maskne

Ack, it’s Maskne! Here’s How to Stop the Dots.

Maskne. Just one word, and we’re all commiserating. It’s such a 2020 problem, isn’t it? Because of the virus, we constantly wear masks to protect ourselves and the ones we love; but we’re now left with a new problem: acne! It’s no surprise; after wearing a mask all the time, lots of moisture accumulates around our mouths, which lets bacteria grow. It seems like a small price to pay for everyone’s safety, but it still damages our self esteem. 

For now, all we can do is try our best to tackle this new issue by refocusing our skincare routine! Here are a few tips that have helped us get our maskne under control:

  1. If you’re using fabric masks, wash them after each use! While it’s tempting to just let them air out for a few days to kill germs, a lot of bacteria from face products and sweat builds up. (If you’re using a disposable mask, be sure to replace it each time you go out!)

  2. Before AND after wearing a mask, wash your face with a gentle face wash. Try to avoid using exfoliants, because it strips the skin of its natural oils and breaks down barriers that block bacteria! The best face cleansers for this task would be those with salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or calendula essence.

  3. When using makeup, avoid heavy, oil-based products. These clog pores and cause breakouts!

  4. Be sure to moisturize. Using oil-free products will maintain the moisture barrier in your skin, which helps block unwanted bacteria.

  5. Spot treatments can help with acne breakouts. Similar to the face wash, treatments with salicylic acid or tea tree oil are the best!

Maskne is definitely an inconvenience, but with a bit of adjusting, we can work through it! Let’s fight for our collective health and prosperity, and keep up the mask wearing!
