Full Moon Ritual

Full Moon Ritual

The Full Moon arrives at the sign of Leo on February 5, 2023, at 1:28 PM EST. This moon is referred to as the Snow Moon but also goes by the names Hunger Moon, Bear Moon, or Storm Moon.

The names of the moon does not necessarily attribute to just the Full Moon but signifies the name of the Moon for that month. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac names of the moons come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources.

February has typically been the snowiest month throughout history although recently that hasn’t been the case because of global warming. Regardless, this led Native Americans to also call this moon the Hunger Moon as it was the hardest time to grow and procure food. The cold weather and lack of sunlight can make us feel stagnate as we hunker inside to keep warm. This can however also lead us to hold onto clutter, relationships, and other energies that do not serve us.

The fullness of the moon represents the completion of another moon phase. It is a time to slow down and reflect on what no longer serves us, banish bad energy and close the cycle of what we were working on during the time from the New Moon.

No matter what kind of lifestyle you have, personal environments tend to get cluttered. That’s why having a repeating cycle of cleaning and purification whether it’s our physical environment or relationships that no longer serve us. When we lock ourselves into dysfunctional habits, we stifle our forward progress.

Since the Full Moon has a buildup of energy it’s the perfect time for protection rituals to rid ourselves of the energies that are no longer working for us and arm ourselves against psychic invasion.

The following is an adaption of a Full Moon ritual from the book Moon Magick by D.J. Conway, that will banish bad energy and protect you in the coming month.

For this ritual you will need:

A cauldron of water, this can also be a simple small bowl of water

Three candles either all white or one black, one red and one white.

Lavender, clove, or jasmine oil as your anointing oil

Salt to encircle your ritual area and altar

Set up your altar with the cauldron in the middle, the black candle to the left of it, red candle to the right and the white candle directly behind the cauldron. Do not light the candles yet. Sprinkle the salt in a clockwise circle around your altar. Light the candles and face the East.

Facing East and say:

By the power of the rising Sun,

All evil in my life is done.

Turn to the South and say:

By the power of the noonday blast,

All control is mine at last.

Turn to the West and say:

By the power of the darkening night,

My shield is strong, my armor tight.

Turn to the North and say:

By Full Moon in the blackened sky,

I am not alone. My help is nigh.

The Goddess’s hands around me stay,

To keep me safe by night and day.

Begone, foul spirits, unbidden here!

I send you out. I do not fear,

For I have won, I am set free!

You have no power over me.

Take the anointing oil and put a drop on your forefinger. With the oil, anoint your forehead head, heart, solar plexus, wrists, and tops of your feet. As you do this, visualize a shining blue suit of armor slowly descending over your body until you are entirely protected. Thank the Goddess for her help and extinguish the candles. Apply the oil and repeat the chants whenever you feel the armor slipping.

A closing note, if you don’t perform rituals the Full Moon is still a great time to charge your crystals or magical tools in the rays of the Full Moon.
